Monroe Township Mills

From History of Madison County, W. H. Beers & Co, Chicago, 1883

The mills of Monroe are things of the past, there being nothing of the kind now within its limits unless it be one or two portablemills. But as we deal with the past more especially than with the present, we must carry the reader back to just a few years after the Bradleys settled here, perhaps about 1812-15, and observe on Spring Fork a grist mill erected by Jonah Bradley, and run by water-power, which was one of the first mills of the county. As stated in the history of the Bradley family, this was one of the great improvements of that day, and a great convenience to the settlement; as prior to its erection they had to go a great distance, many going to Chillicothe to do their grinding and trading. There were no other mills we think necessary to mention.
